A British Airways flight from London to Germany took off in the wrong direction and landed in Scotland:

A British Airways flight bound to Düsseldorf, Germany, from London accidentally landed in Edinburgh, Scotland, instead, 850 kilometeres from where it should have been.

British Airways said in a statement to the Business Insider that the plane ended up in Edinburgh after the flight paperwork was submitted incorrectly.

"The pilot said he had no idea how it had happened. He said it had never happened before and that the crew was trying to work out what we could do," Sophie Cooke, a passenger on the flight, told the BBC.

Lucky for them.....

Edinburgh is far nicer than most German cities, anyway.
Plenty of good pubs to slip into for a pint and a wee dram ;)

Here's the explanation:

This has actually happened quite a few times in the past. The on-board computer is fed the wrong info and the plane's auto-pilot flies it where its told to. Another case of technology getting ahead of the dimwits flying the plane.

Reminds me of an old joke.

In 1960, an TWA flight landed at Berlin airport. The pilot got lost taxing to the terminal and caused a traffic back up.

The ATC was upset and radioed to the pilot, "You American pilots! Have you never flown to Berlin before?"

The pilot relied, "Oh yes, many times, during the war. But I never landed here."

He was a genius. With Ginger and Mary Ann around would you want to be rescued?

We flew into Frankfort at the start of one of our European trips. I thought it might be the Detroit of Germany.
