Churchill Downs and Keeneland Partnership Good or Bad? Affect on K.Y. Downs?
The key phrasing is, "on the border with Tennessee", meaning near the Nashville market. Meaning near Kentucky Downs.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, (even though I must say it's fun to satirize the Churchill suits as Death Star denizens), but these two working so closely on things so anti-Kentucky Downs seems to fit more of a pattern of late.
Whatever the case, the new Keeneland looks a lot more like a death star corporate track than the track they worked so hard for years to be.

I call for an immediate boycott of the new Quarter Horse and Standard Bred tracks proposed by CDI and Keeneland! They will not get a dime of my money for the remainder of 2017.

It feels like Keeneland (best friend) just slept with my girlfriend...
Totally expect BS like this from Churchill Downs. Keeneland though, that is my happy place. I've always loved everything about or having to do with Keeneland, and they're changing before all of our very eyes and it literally makes me sad.

Kentucky commission head REJECTS Churchill-Keeneland proposal
http://www.drf.com/news/kentucky-com...eland-proposal
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The chairman of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission late on Friday poured cold water on a joint announcement earlier in the day by Keeneland and Churchill Downs about their plans to apply to the commission for licenses for two new gambling facilities in southern Kentucky, stating flatly that the commission will not consider the joint applications.

Seeing "live racing and historical racing machines" tells me all I need to know. You have a casino company and a sales house that occasionally has racing. I can see them running a five or six day meet strictly for the casino money.

To be fair, isn't that exactly how Kentucky Downs' own president described his own track? While we don't need new tracks, hard to blame competitors for wanting to get in on that money.

The owner of Kentucky Downs tries to get more dates to race every year but gets screwed over by Churchill and Keeneland.

KD is is by far better racing than CD and KEE combined.
REAL turf racing there, not the crap the other two feature.

Thanks!
I did not know they had slots there. 600 gaming machines.
I looked up the owners. One was Prez of Lonestar park at one time.
I was wondering why CDX hadnt just bought them out. Those gaming machines must be very valuable if CDX just can't buy the place

Churchill and Keeneland, RIvals No More while trying to "knife" Kentucky Downs
And if sticking a knife into the heart of Kentucky Downs, which has basked in the national spotlight this month with its highly popular five-day session of unique turf racing and fan-friendly tax rates, that’s an added bonus.
Now we know the real reason for the outrageous takeout increase slated to begin at the Keeneland Fall meet: A homogeneous, maxed-out, tax-on-horseplayer-winnings that not only puts it in line with what CDI charges but sets the same high-rate table it would charge at the new facilities.
To paraphrase Bukowski, “dividends for all my friends!”

I don't know if the author of that article is right or wrong. It sure sounds like there is plenty we don't know about that is going on. I'm guessing that CD and KEE knew they would be turned down, and they unveiled their plans anyway, perhaps in hopes there'd be public pressure to let them proceed. The terse response by the KHRC indicates that they're are annoyed with KEE and CD doing this, and not just because they'd already been told their plan wouldn't be considered. I don't think too many in the industry outside of KEE and CD care about their plans because not many tongues are wagging. The few I've heard aren't in favor and are wondering what CD and KEE are up to.

These stories always seem to get better as time passes. And this one doesn’t disappoint. In the first line he writes “In the spirit of full disclosure — which, in truth, is what this column is all about” yet he doesn’t disclose that he, Gene McLean is a lobbyist for Churchill Downs. What kind of a disingenuous “dick” doesn’t disclose that he’s a lobbyist for Churchill Downs (or at least was in 2016) in the article where he talks about truth and transparency?
This is the way the lowlife’s do it. Keep up the good work Gene.
And as always we will apologize IF we got the wrong guy but I don’t think so.

Excerpt:
Top paid lobbyists for 2016 session
Through the first four months of 2016 many of Frankfort’s top lobbyists have already made much more money in lobbying fees than the $140,000 salary that Gov. Matt Bevin will make for the whole year.
The nearly 700 corporations and associations that lobby the General Assembly are required to report exactly how much they pay each lobbyist they retain. These reports are filed monthly during legislative sessions with the Legislative Ethics Commission.
Recently, these groups reported their lobbying fees and expenses for the month of April. Listed below (according to the commission's website right now) are the total in fees paid to particular lobbyists by their many clients for the 2016 legislative session – Jan. 1 through April 30.
Each of the following lobbyists has many clients. Listed with each name is the total in reported fees paid by all those clients this year through April 30, the number of clients he or she works for, and a sampling of their clients.

Apparently, the recent decision by Keeneland management to increase takeout wasn't a big enough middle finger to horseplayers.
Now it appears they want to go after Kentucky Downs.
I can think of a few choice words for that:
