It seems to me Pletcher cranks his young horses up early in their career trying to win stakes. Then they often don't develop as much later like they do for trainers that take a more patient approach. If he gets that stake win early, he's established the value of the horse. So it probably makes sense to retire them before the later bloomers catch up and pass them by.
