Lots of theaters are closing, mostly due to competition from TV, Netflix, Hulu, You-Tube, etc.
Our local theatre closed 2 or 3 years ago. The facility belonged to a Mall. Unable to get satisfactory lease renewal terms the theater operators took all their equipment and vacated only hours before the lease expired. No one in town expected this. Other theaters were 30 to 40 miles away. After a few dark weeks another operator was found and the theater reopened.
Apparently the bone of contention was that the operators wanted to sell alcoholic beverages and the mall was having none of it. The re-opened theater now sells booze.
