The reality is, is that most high income states don't get back from the feds anywhere near what they send to Washington. Most of those states happen to vote Democratic. Most of the states running a surplus in what they receive as opposed to what they send vote Republican. This isn't a one time thing, it's been that way for quite a while.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that red states tend to re-elect incumbents.Time on the job = seniority.Seniority=power. Power=taking care of the folks back home.If that's accomplished with other people's money, all the better.

Kentucky is numero uno on that list. And from what state does the majority leader of the Senate hail from?
The funds sent to bases and things like farm program are figured into those numbers. ND for example, has both. Of course they contribute to the economy. But we have a multi billion dollar surplus here and we are one of the lowest taxed states in the country. The Air Bases don't contribute nearly as much to the economy here as they used to. They closed down the missile wing at GFAB quite a few years ago and deeply cut the missile wing at MAFB. Minot is basically a bomber wing now with a greatly reduced missile wing. GFAB is a drone and refueling base now. The numbers of enlisted members there now is much lower than it used to be.

The farm program is basically crop insurance and food stamps. The crop insurance claims don't add to the economy they just replace money that would have been in there if there wasn't crop claims. It's not new revenue. And we probably have the lowest number on food stamps in the nation here.
