I don't understand the unrealistic expectations.
These are once a year events that are nearly impossible to staff properly. Comparisons to Saratoga, the NBA, or even to NASCAR are preposterous.
They are more like Sturgis where you take the good, and roll with the flow with the bad. Instead of whining like wimpy unicyclists at a Harley-fest.

Friday card looks excellent. Full fields and.....and....good weather!
McKay Turf Sprint and DuPont Distaff have small fields but the other Stks are pretty full.
Black Eyed Susan
Pim Special
Miss Preakness
Hilltop
Can't wait for one more go round with my pops

14 entered in the Pimlico special. Note the distance change to 10 furlongs.

the bad news and the good news
I saw two weather forecasts for Preakness day in MD, one said 10 percent rain, the other said 3 percent rain.
Here's a third: it always rains, so this year, again, it will rain, but not so much that the parking lot will flood. The other good news is that there will be less boat races than on the Ky. Derby undercard. And with no Triple Crown possibility this year it will be a bit less crowded. Hey, you can always hope, and with a whole lotta luck your wet dreams may come true; your true American hero, Attorney General Bill Barr may come out of hiding and join the fun.
Just don't bet on it.

In general....
There is Nothing that is not falling apart openly...the gouges are just finding new ways to get at the gamblers emotional and established wallet attachments to the sport....

It's a small change but why mess with it? Why does Strobach always have to change something? Changing all the stake names at Santa Anita's to those generic names now. Why? Leave the shit alone!!

My suspicion is that there needs to be a motivator to get out of a seat to bet. Rather than an ADW taking the bulk of the takeout, the track wants it all from people on track

Just left Pimlico after playing most of the Thurs card.
Saturday is gonna be rough y'all....there's a huge tarp covering the condemned grandstand, but what's most troublesome is that the area below the grandstand (where they had about 20 betting windows and some restrooms) is also closed to the public. Also closed are the box seats on the stairs directly in front of the grandstand. Only the track apron is open for seating this wknd.
Lines at the other windows and restrooms will be longer this year. I guess the double super secret men's room on floor 1.5 will not be the easy in-easy out trip it was in years past.
Oh well....we'll deal with it! Wouldn't rather be anywhere else

Incorrect !
I was misled by a Pim employee (imagine that)...went there today and the area underneath the grandstand IS OPEN with betting windows and bathrooms.
My apologies for the misleading info in my above post

They'd be hard pressed to out-do Belmont Park the year Big Brown ran in sweltering heat on hottest day of the year......they had plumbing problems due to lack of water pressure as I remember it, toilets wouldn't flush, then they actually ran out of bottled water to sell to the customers.
We're talking basic human amenities here. A far cry from over charging for beer and hot dogs.
