Titan Submersible

Sadly, it is nearly certain that the crew has died.

On a real note though: what is the intrigue of taking such a risky voyage just to see what is just a pile of rusted junk at the bottom of the sea? All they had was a tiny window with which to view the Titanic wreckage anyway. They could see better pictures on their computer.

From what I've read, this vessel wasn't exactly an engineering marvel, to say the least.

Good Lord people.

Sad, terrible way to go.
Lots of questions about that vehicle.

Jodh Gates and his Expedition Unknown crew has planned
a show and filmed indide that very capsule a couple years ago
and cancelled after serious concerns for the safety of it.

Prayer to them and their survivors.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like an area that needs more government safety regulations. A submarine using a $30 video game controller? Thoughts and prayers are all I can give.

I disagree. The rich can be be eccentric and weird...and that's their right. This was a private venture, and I have to think they all knew the risks involved. If they want to assume risks even if ill-advised, that's their right too. If they have perished in their folly, so be it. I'm just glad that no one on any of the search-rescue teams has been injured or killed.

It’s international waters. No governing body applies except maritime rules

People don't realize the enormous pressures any vessel would have to withstand at these depths. Any tiny breech would result in instant implosion. No certification or safety standards exist for such a sub. No oversight.
I wouldn't be caught dead aboard the contraption. Gravity and laws of physics is not your friend here.

And the Navy with this knowledge just strung everyone along to keep their hopes alive until today?

You nailed this right down.

related:
In my youth I did a lot of scuba and snorkeling.

Only 4 or 5 times did I ever go below 33 feet.
After that, the math of pressure must be taken into account or it will destroy you.

Once did a free dive to 90 feet in the Bahamas, but that is surprisingly easier because of inhaling on the surface.

That's what happens when a design calling for 7" thick walls is built 5" thick.
