Parx canceled today because......

The HOT BOX is not working and the riders can't make weight to ride!

Never heard that one before.

Would Keystone/Philadelphia Park (pre-slots) have cancelled for this reason? Having those machines humming everyday sure must be nice. Before slots, a bunch of overweight jockeys would have been riding that day because the races were going...as scheduled.

It is my understanding that the jockeys decided not to ride, thus the cancellation. Oversized purses...once again, must be nice.

Seriously...I would have to imagine anyone that follows/wagers on this track has to spend a lot of time frustrated. And that's BEFORE their money gets run over.

If they were smart, they would have made it so the weight allowances were five more pounds just for that day. Makes everyone happy. Jockeys can ride and get money, owners don't get screwed over on shipping bills, etc.

Also, it seems on Twitter and other discussions a lot of people believe the weights should be raised...don't think that solves anything

When did they inform the attendees? After they drove from their homes?

At least they didn't have to pay the 30% exotic takeout that day.

They had someone tell those five guys as they walked in the door. Luckily the casino was still open, and they still have time to catch the Early Bird at Denny's down the road.

This has to be a terrible way to live. Long past time to raise the weights.

I guess it depends on how much you raise the weights by.

The argument has always been made that if you raise the weights by 10 pounds, you're going to get another new group of people that were previously too heavy to make the old weights, trying to reduce and make the new weights.

There will always be a group on the fringe trying to make the weight, but we should still raise the scale. At least then we will have a larger group of riders available to ride more normally.
then, take out the hot boxes. Don't pander this vile way of life.

Long overdue...I think possibly the reason Parx cancelled is they did not want the public to know how many of these guys were dropping X amount of lbs. If each jockey was say 1,2 or 3 pounds overweight I think they run.

It's a scary thought if we are betting on some of these guys if they are losing much more than that daily.
