I've been to Old Friends. It's quite a place.
Mr Blowen happened to be out and about and joined our tour about half way through.
When we got to the place where Precisionist is buried, he was telling the group about the horse and the circumstances surrounding Precisionist's coming to Old Friends. For a time there. Mr Blowen got pretty choked up. It seems he genuinely cares about the horses so much so that he treats them like family members.

Jockey Pedro Nazario at hospital. Twitter says he broke his 5th and 6th vertebrae.

Stormy Surge, born on May 2, 2003, was euthanized at Golden Gate after an on track injury. The CHRB notes say he died on Jan 12th and he was entered and scratched out of the first race on Jan 16th.
The reason for the scratch, according to CHRB notes on their website?
Scratched Sick.

RIP General Challenge !
General Challenge, California's top 3-year-old male in 1999, was euthanized Feb. 4 at Golden Eagle Farm after his "condition deteriorated rapidly," the farm said on its Facebook page. The gelding was 18.
General Challenge retired from racing in the summer of 2003 and spent his days as a farm pony at the California breeding farm. Staff said "everyone at the farm was with him when he passed (away). He is being buried next to Best Pal (at Golden Eagle)."

Reading this gave me pause to reflect upon John & Betty MaBee's tenure. They were tremendous stewards of the breed and the game.

From Amanda Duckworth's article a year ago ESPN . He just wanted to be a retiree . He certainly earned that !
Since he was a gelding, the game plan was to turn him into a farm pony, but General Challenge had other ideas. So, they thought was he might like jumping. Again, General Challenge had other ideas.
General Challenge has become a popular fan attraction in his retirement."He absolutely hated anything we tired," said Golden Eagle Farm's Lori Piedra. "We tried to make him a pony horse; he would try to kill any horse that came up next to him. We tried jumping; he didn't like it. He loves being a retired pasture pony. That's what he wants."
And so a decade after his retirement, and 13 years removed from his last Grade 1 victory, that is how General Challenge spends his days. He is completely, 100% retired.

That attitude might explain why he was brilliant on some occasions but disappointing on some others. He was probably already planning his retirement. I was always a fan.

Bertrando gone at age 25 ! RIP Big Boy !
Bertrando was 25. On the racetrack, he won 9 of 24 starts and earned $3,185,610 in a career highlighted by eight stakes wins, including three Grade 1 races – the 1991 Norfolk Stakes and the Pacific Classic and Woodward Stakes in 1993. Bertrando started in three Breeders’ Cup races, finishing second in the 1991 Juvenile, second in the 1993 Classic, and sixth in the 1994 Classic.
Bertrando entered the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Classic with a chance at the Horse of the Year title, but was beaten by the European longshot Arcangues.
By Skywalker, Bertrando was bred by Edward Nahem and was raced by him in partnership with 505 Farms and Gus Headley early in his career. Later, Nahem and Marshall Naify’s 505 Farms were listed as owners. Bertrando was trained by Bruce Headley, Bobby Frankel, and John Shirreffs during his racing career.
Nahem, who died in 2007, stood Bertrando at stud in partnership with Wygod. The stallion was an early success, as California’s leading freshman stallion of 1997. He was also the state’s leading sire by progeny earnings in 2005 and 2007.
