NYRA tracks & takeout

considerably better -probably most know this - but I posted just in case some didn't

they also have dime instead of 20 cent breakage

Woodbine has that too but not as good a deal on the takeout

Uh, when they have nickel breakage, that's when you're supposed to come and tell us.

Dime breakage is standard.

No. 20 cent breakage is standard on WPS

as far as I know only Woodbine and NYRA have dime breakage on WPS

the others standardly only break to the dime on $2.10

there are also some odd breakages on less than a dollar plays such as the $.50 plays at Santa Anita. looks like they're breaking to the nickel

HOUSTON-I think we have a problem here.

okay - here's what it is: a $ 6.30 WPS payout at New York and Woodbine is called nickel breakage - I was wrongly calling that dime breakage -

at Churchill the same numbers on WPS would pay $6.20 - I was wrongly calling that 20 cent breakage - but apparently the correct term is dime breakage

from HANA:

"Most jurisdictions allow tracks to "break" to the dime (Canada and New York state break to the nickel). In other words, after the track applies their track takeout to the total money bet, they round down what they pay to the bettor to the nearest 20 cent interval per $2 wager. In Canada and New York state, the payoff is rounded down to the nearest 10 cent interval per $2 wager."

Breakage is calculated on what is called the $1 unbroken price, which is the raw odds from the pools plus 1
they call it Profit per Dollar plus, (also called decimal odds) The breaks are as follows:

Unbroken Price
1.05 to 4.99..... 0.05
5 to 24.99...... 0.10
25 to 249.99..... 0.25
250 and up...... 0.50

this results in the broken price, from which payouts are calculated, and odds posted. To get the full breakage applied to a $2 payout the actual breaks should be multiplied by 2

The Association of Racing Commissioners International provide the model rules from which individual states adapt to their purposes. The calculations are on page 59 of the latest rules.

There should be no breakage when wagers are made digitally. There is no reason not to pay to the nearest penny rounded in favor of the player.

Breakage is just a way for tracks to skim a little extra.
