I don't know if we discussed but saw a article last week (Foreign Affairs I think) showing how this trade war has been a massive boom to China's Belt/Road partners.

The trade deficit has grown as China has shut off American purchases and instead begun developing these relationships in earnest.

Those purchases, especially agri-product, are unlikely to ever come back.

"Fueled by continuous growth, Vietnam continues to attract record foreign direct investment (FDI).* The latest data from the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) shows that FDI in Vietnam in the first five months of the year reached a four year high of US$16.74 billion. This inflow represents a year-on-year increase of 69.1 percent."

https://www.vietnam-briefing.com/new...y-sector.html/

*FDI = more permanent capital investments (e.g., building a factory) vs Indirect Investment (e.g., buying a stock on Vietnam exchange with no control).

This is what I meant yesterday when I said China was strengthening itself. Diversifying its supply chain..

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says her government will "formally withdraw" an extradition bill that triggered 3 months of pro-democracy protests " in order to fully allay public concerns.

If she does this it could end the protests before they erupt into total chaos.
