Del Mar Announcement

Del Mar is going to release some news in about 15 minutes from now...I wonder what this will be...? Maybe regarding Breeders Cup....or more racing dates and expansion of the grounds...?

Here's the press release big news from Del Mar:

"Juddmonte Farms’ Arrogate, the dynamic 4-year-old colt who has set racing afire with a series of powerful winning performances in the world’s top races, appears likely to make his next start in the TVG San Diego Handicap on Saturday, July 22 at Del Mar, it has been announced."

He will go to Pacific Classic to BC, its worked 3 years in a row for baffert not prepping after summer.

Now you know how the West Coast felt about American Pharoah. Never ran here again after the TC.

American Pharoah didn't run period on the West Coast as a 3yo.

Of course, because of the West Coast's horrible historic stakes schedule the last half of the year, there is no important races strictly for 3yos on the main track.

That is, unless you think American Pharoah ducked Kentuckian in the Los Alamitos Derby that year.

Could this, perhaps, signify that US racing has enough quality G1 races
for 3 year olds, and that there really shouldn't be an East v West thing here?
Just saying.....

This makes sense only if you believe the various racetracks across the country work collaboratively with each other's interests in mind...

...or if you've been:

I don't blame Baffert for not running here. You are right, the only real option is to run against older in the Pacific Classic

I was just saying we felt the same way the earlier poster did about Arrogate.

If Arrogate wins out for the rest of the year, will he be denied HOY because Baffert had the gumption not to run him in NY and KY?

Arrogate is HOTY if he wins the BC Classic, even if he loses 5 races in between.

Pegasus-Dubai-BC is enough.

I know it's a secondary concern at the moment but I'm 99.999% Ritvo changes the stakes schedule.

I don't know him but in talking to people one of his specialties is getting people to see the light. While SoCal Horsemen are the worst even they can't defend this stakes schedule. Between the SA Derby in April and the Malibu in December there's not one decent three year old stake. The only horse flesh asset SoCal has is expensive three year olds because of Baffert. So in the winter he ships because he has too many and in the summer and fall he ships because he has no races.

Btw... Since two turn Turf racing is irrelevant in SoCal Del Mar really needs to make the Oceanside a dirt race.

What's worse is that Baffert has clearly shown a preference over recent years for starting his main classic contenders no earlier than March of their 3yo year.

So 2 or 3 "graded" stakes (who knew the Sham Stakes would be so appropriately named?) run earlier on the calendar at Santa Anita don't even get the benefit of a marquee Baffert horse, just perhaps a recent maiden breaker and whatnot.

And draw a 5 horse field on opening day at Del Mar?
