Race One:

FANGIRL got caught in a speed duel in her last and finished a fading 5th against better over three months ago. A less frenetic pace would give this highly-priced chestnut filly a solid chance of winning this 6-furlongs MSW sprint. Trainer John Terranova II – he’s having a solid meet – is trying the blinkers (he does well in that category). He also does well with horses who have been “on vacation”. Jose Lezcano is in the irons. Others: 4 ENJOYITWHILEWECAN, 5 GRACETOWN, 7 WIN THE SHAKE.

Race Two:

SANDY LANE is a gelding I would deem “a plodder”. I believe it’s that type of horse that can prevail in this 9-panels claiming route. I look for this Awesome Again 4-year old to be coming late. He ships in from Laurel where he faced batter. This Say Florida Sandy-bred switches to the Bob Klesaris barn. Dylan Davis has the call. Others: 5 CALL ME; 3 INCUBATOR; 6 ADMIRAL BLUE.

Race Three:

The alliterative, , COTTON CANDY CUTIE (you get her stablemate, 1, OVERNEGOTIATE) is “shortening up” after an up-the-track finish on New Year’s Eve day. That cut back may be a prescription for a visit to the winner’s circle. This 6-year old Candy Ride-bred mare has shifted from the Rudy Rodriguez barn to that of Mertkan Kantarmaci. Will this gal’s new surrounding serve as a wake-up call? Kantarmaci doe very well with horses making their first start under his tutelage. Ruben Silvera has his feet in the stirrups. Others: 3 CLAIRVOYANT LADY, 4 AIKENETTA, 6 MADAME BARBARIAN.

Race Four:

ROCKIN EMMZY is my medium long-shot pick in this one-mile maiden claimer. This highly-priced Tale of the Cat-bred chestnut filly came up short as the odds-on favorite against slightly weaker. This filly was claimed out of that one by “The Queen of Racine,” Wisconsin that is, Linda Rice. I like horses making their first start under Linda Rice’s tutelage. Rice, who’s having an excellent meet, does very well with horses making their first start under her care. Junior Alvarado has the call. I’m thinking that a dryer surface will aid and abet this distaffer’s chances. Others: 1 REDOUBLE, 5 DIZZY, 3 STAY SMART.

Race Five:

It’s the Grade III TOBBOGAN at 7-panels for a purse of 100k. I’m going to try to pull the upset with the Todd Pletcher-trainee, BAL HARBOUR. This First Samurai-bred gelding might have caught a “bridge too far” in his last. He now shortens up to seven panels. This 4-year old is a versatile sort who can be sent to the lead, or who can be held in the rear and then “sent” at the top of the stretch. This Kentucky-bred’s sharp recent workout augers well for his chances to get his picture taken. Junior Alvarado is in the irons. Others: 2 SKYLER’s SCRAMJET, 1 GOLD FOR THE KING, 5 SOLID WAGER.

Race Six:

TWOFER is making a big class drop. Class-wise, this Super Saver-bred 4-year old filly appears to tower over this field. At this level, this bay filly looks tough to beat (might I even say, “She looks ‘suspicious’ in this lower-level MC.”). The rider-switch to Junior Alvarado is significant. Gary Contessa trains. Others: 6 PRINESS MICAYAH, 4 MISS LOYALTY, 1 GIANT ENDING.

Race Seven:

MALIBU ACTION was overmatched in his last. This 6-year old chestnut gelding now meets a field that he can contend with. This once highly-priced Malibu Moon-bred has been an “in-‘n’-out” kinda horse. He puts up an excellent effort and that follows that with “a clunker”. Is today the solid effort day? Carlos Hernandez has his feet in the stirrups for trainer Tim Hills. Others: 6 SCARF IT DOWN, 5 FOUR FREEDOMS, 2 HAVE ANOTHER.

Race Eight:

LOCAL COUNSEL finished 3rd versus similar in his last. If the rail is the place to be, that could work to this Union Rags-bred colt’s advantage. He certainly fits well in the OC company. Mark Hennig trains this Bedside Manner-bred. Jose Lezcano has the call. Others: 3 FOX RULES, 6 CALCULATED RISK, 1/1A, BROADWAY BAY/CAUSE I’M ALEX.

Race Nine:

In the finale, PLANET TRAILBLAZER ships in from “The City of Brotherly Love” for trainer Jason Servis (that 43% claim repeater is off the charts!). Yes, this lightly-raced Mr. Prospector-bred is moving up, but… If this guy runs anywhere near his last two, he should prevail. Jose Lezcano has his feet in the stirrups. Others: 8 AVAST MATEY, 5 PROUD ZIP, 1 BORSA VENTO.
