I would have thought this, too. As a matter of fact, I did.

But apparently, nobody told Castellano that, as he was seriously over-whipping Bolt in the stretch.

An experienced horse like Bolt only need have the whip showed to him, or a light tap or 2 on the shoulder. Bolt wasn't going to beat Justify that day in the stretch, so I'm still quite unclear as to why Castellano wailing away on him like that.

Unless he knew he was getting off the horse for the Derby, and was purposely "using him up"?

I agree with every word you wrote. I have never been a fan of Castellano ...

I love the fool logic. Bolt had a hard wire race off the layoff. An entire stretch of a battle off the bench is something. Not being emptied vs a loose horse=not worried. He could not have run a better race to set up for the Derby. Everything is on the table for this horse in my profound and elegant and insightful eyes!

Was not knocking him. He's a must use in any trifecta ticket IMHO

I was mainly commenting on possibility of Castellano's excessive whipping and possible motives.

For the record that is the only time I bitch at the television screen. I see clear winners and the jockey is still going to work and sometimes hardcore. Put that F-in whip away. I hate it.

Yesterday at Lone star the jock was up 6 and going well at the 1/16 pole.
and the poor horse gets a "reminder". excessive whipping is poor horsemanship. a hand ride was needed. Leave the whip at home.

I owned a horse once and he was up 3, cruising to an allowance win at Monmouth. Inside the furlong pole. Money in the bank I say to myself. Suddenly jock gives him a hard stroke of a left handed whip and the horse bolts to the outside almost dumping the jock. I was shocked. (as were all my partners). anyway the jock righted the horse and ran at the end to win. I assure there was no glad handing the jock that day.
