The new "best thing" out there. Let me know if you want to borrow it from my kindle library.

Remember...when it comes to poker, playing isn't "learning".

great to read!

I lost $199 on my last trip down to fall to -$60 (2-2) for the year. I think you were in Oregon??

I did at least avoid the denny's.

Just curious, does anyone play limit hold'em anymore or is the game almost dead?

it seems to be more of a west coast thing and dilanesp on here is real good in so cal.

In some of the old proximity poker tour threads in this forum, I grinded out a ton of caesars points playing in Baltimore and ac. these are mostly low limit games though.

it is mostly a 1-2 nl world around here.

Is Penn National 1/2 ?

CT is 1/2, but Maryland Live, The Horseshoe, and MGM are all 1/3, and some of those games supposedly play more like 2/5!

BTW, current finishing a driving racing tour of some Harness tracks. While up in Maine I spent 3 days at Hollywood Bangor, which is the only Poker room in the state. Lost about $335, but that was softened by winning two $100 High Hand promotions. They only have four tables, but on Fridays they had a nice but unusual promotion. It was $100 each hour for as long as the room had players. There was a roll-over too if no qualifying hand, which was any full house with both hole cards playing. I don't recall if there was a pot minimum, but it was a 1/3 NL game, so there was almost always $10+ in the pot. They did not have readers to swipe a player's card in (it was the same card as Charles Town), but you needed to present it before getting paid. Here is the real interesting part, EACH table functioned independently, so High Hands were paid at each table without regard to what hands qualified at each of the other tables! My second winning promotion occurred at 1:18 a.m. with only a $30 stack size left. A guy ahead of me raises to $13, and I shove all in with pocket aces. The flop has a K, followed by the turn and river of a K and A respectively. I then stepped away from the table and waited 42 minutes to see if my hand would hold up, which it did.

Another really weird thing about this particular room is the "Straddle", which can be for $5 and up and from any position except the blinds. Only, instead of getting to act last pre-flop, things progress in the normal order as if there was not a Straddle at all. In other words, the Straddle is really a blind raise before you get to see your cards, but without the benefit of acting last pre-flop.

Overall a good poker room though.

also I forgot to mention that there is a website www.bravopokerlive.com where you can track all the live games and waiting lists at almost every American and even some foreign casinos. you could even query by specific game types and stakes.

good luck!!

I'm not a particularly good poker player even though I've read a lot of books and played regularly during the online poker craze. I won a little (plus deposit bonuses) during that period but I was playing in the low limit $1-$2 games. Beyond that I probably didn't have an edge.

I just know that my personality is more geared towards the math of the game and less towards reading opponents, preventing them from reading me, bluffing etc.. I think online limit is about the only thing that could work for me if the game was still popular enough to find action against players my caliber.

Other than house games with friends, I've never played live poker. Any advice for first-timer playing in casino cash game? I plan on playing at Resorts World Catskills up in Monticello, NY, maybe this weekend. Bankroll will be purely disposable money of say $300-500. Looks like they offer both limit and NL games. Thanks in advance.

-Cover your hole cards carefully, that is look carefully and make sure the players next to you can't see plus protect your cards, one time a dealer swept up my cards when I was not mucking, since then if I'm in I put a chip over my cards on the table.

-Tip a $1 to dealer for a winning hand, more if hyuge, some may disagree...

-It can get crowded, person to right or left or both can be big or annoying, etc...you can always ask to move

-It is nice if you pay attention and keep the game moving, have blinds ready, etc

Anything specific? I'd like to hear others replies too.

great tips by runfortheroses and I would mainly focus on those and not try to bring too much into it because there will certainly be enough nervousness as it is.

there is usually a podium at the front of the rooms and that's where you will sign up for the game. it's ok to tell them you're a new player. they will help you. if there's not an open seat for your game you usually give them your initials and "te" will be placed on the list that is on tv monitors around the room.

maybe watch a little bit before diving in, but do dive in and don't try to be perfect. enjoy the poker and the casino and have fun. it looks really nice!

good luck!!

Thank you both for the good advice. I absolutely will make it known at check-in that I'm a first-timer to get whatever help and courtesies are available, there's no point trying to fake like you're an old pro when you're not.

I've read a few accounts of how not protecting your cards can lead to a bad outcome through no fault of your own, so I will keep that foremost in my mind and try to make it a routine. I believe you're allowed to use your own card protector so I plan on bringing a silver dollar with me to use as my card protector, which is hefty and distinctive but not obtrusive.

Another piece of advice given to me is when having the winning hand, to not relinquish my cards to the dealer until the pot is pushed my way - let's hope that's a common occurrence.

Keep the talking to a minimum, and you'll do fine. IMO...the only time when it's permissible to announce at the poker table that you are a novice, is when you are not.

I'm not planning on broadcasting my newbie information at the table, just at the check-in desk. At the table, I'll be polite and friendly, but won't be engaging in any idle chit-chat as I'll have enough to deal with just trying to stay with the action.

Pick up a book about the sort of game that you are interested in...it'll be a big help. The poker books out there are way more informative than the horse-handicapping books that we typically find.

I played at the Resorts World Catskills when visiting the Monticello (harness) track a few months back. Very nice facility, which I think was around 6 miles away from the racetrack.

My advice.........be yourself and play somewhat tight, meaning don't limp in with marginal hands, particularly in the no limit games.

Good luck, and let us know how you did.
