2019 Male 3-year-old-champ
Richard Eng wrote an article last week on the murky American Champion 3-year-old male horse division. He mentions that there are three races left that could help decide it: the PA Derby(Mr. Money, Maximum Security, War of Will), JCGC (Code Of Honor, Tacitus), and, of course, the Breeders Cup (TBD).
https://www.americasbestracing.net/t...-breeders-cup/
Eng points out that if Code Of Honor wins the JCGC, then he’ll be the favorite going into the Breeders Cup. My opinion: If any of those five win their next race (PA Derby or JCGC) , they will be the “Leader in the clubhouse” going into the Breeders Cup. If two of the five win, then that would make things interesting.
I’m still not counting Shancelot out yet. That win(121 beyer) in the July 28th Amsterdam stakes at Saratoga was historic. I’m not sure where he’ll be running next, but if he wins the BC sprint, for example, then he’ll have case to make, especially if the big five bomb.
The question is who do you think will be the three-year-old champ, not who is the current leader if the voting were held today.

Too early to say. More races to come that will be by far better than what has been run so far.
But on thing I am certain off, Shancelot has no shot no matter what he does.
Max, Code, and Tacitus look like the three with the best shot, but WOW could win a major prep and then run well in the Classic,

I agree it's too early to say. Today it would be Maximum Security with COH in close attendance.

Ah you got me. Code of Honor then...
be interesting to see what Omaha Beach does in his return, esp if he lines up against Monomoy Girl.

He has been right there more than anyone, and what id he wins the JCCG and then wins or runs second to and older horse in the Classic?
It ain't over until the fat lady eases in the stretch.

So a perpetual loser should get 3 year old of the year for losing again in the BC?
I don't see it.

When you only take half of what I said, you make sense.

He’d probably would have to win both and that’s a big ask.

What if Omaha beach comes back and wins his start at Churchill and then wins the BC Classic, would that vault him past the usual suspects?

I think that if any 3-yr-old were to win the BCC , they would be crowned the 3-yr-old champ. Wasnt that the whole point of the BC, to decide it on the course? (Eng does make the same point)

I certainly think a 3 year old who won the BCC would get some votes, but my guess is unless Code of Honor or War of Will wins the BCC, Maximum Security would still be 3 year old of the year.

I agree with you Tom. If he does what you propose, Tacitus would have beaten Code of Honor(COH) twice(in JCGC & BCC, assuming COH runs in the BCC) and lost to him twice(in the K.Derby and Travers). COH would have a G1, G2 and G3 on his resume(Travers, Dryer & Fountain of Youth), and Tacitus have two G1s and two G2s (BCC, JCGC, Wood and Tampa). Even if he came in 2nd in the BCC, Tacitus’ record would still be better as far as graded stakes.
As far as Maximum Security (MS). MS would have three G1s (Fl. Derby, Haskell, and PA Derby (assuming he wins it)). Tacitus would have beaten him twice, K. Derby (MS was disqualified, remember? ) and in the BCC.
Even if Tacitus comes in second to an older horse in the BCC, I would still give it to him because of his three seconds (Jim D, Belmont, Travers). You got to admire a guy who fires in every race. He reminds me a little bit of Hard Spun. He may not win but he will show up.
