Clearly a master lyricist.
The guy just didn’t write bad music. Every lyric and melody was handcrafted. I’ve been power listening to him most of yesterday. Probably today as well. I’m sorry I’ve ignored him in past decades. He deserved better.

Very sad. Alcohol was his vice. You won’t recognize him …….

Great writer
Also suffered a stroke RIGHT ON STAGE.
September 14, 2006, he suffered a minor stroke in the middle of a show, leaving him unable to use the middle and ring finger of his right hand for a while and necessitating that another guitarist sub in for his parts.1 day ago

That was recorded in one take live... He was an amazing musician and songwriter.

As a Canadian of a certain age, Gordon Lightfoot was simply a part of the air, always there - certainly in my musical household of the 60s and 70s. I saw him perform several times over the decades in his 'home' at Toronto's Massey Hall, last time in his late 70s. He even performed a pop-up concert in my small city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island this past winter and I missed getting tickets.

I do believe he had been sober for several decades but he certainly acknowledged the toll alcohol and drugs took oh him and his relationships.

RIP Gordy, and thanks for all the music: we're all richer for it.

Ted
